STUTTGARTER ZEITUNG : Wednesday May 16th

A bureaucratic balls up at an International Festival
The five days of the Donzdorf Festival start tonight - but there were no Visas for the Moroccans

The photo caption reads : Saint George from England with his men and women in Stuttgart, advertising the Donzdorf Festival

The intro is only about the difficulties of getting Visas.

Saint George lifted his arm, beat all comers and then cut off the dragon’s poisonous tail with his wooden sword. The Monster died in tears. The British National Hero had triumphed. The street theatre performances in the last few days by the English Theatre Group from Harlow have made many passers by in Donzdorf, Goppingen, Stuttgart and Schwabisch Gmund very curious about what they were doing. They were using their spectacular play to advertise the sixth International Festival which will be opened in Donzdorf’s Town Hall tonight.

The rest of the article is all about the fight to get the Moroccans and the Ukrainians to Donzdorf - the Ukrainians came, the Moroccans were refused visas (EC Rules / beaurocracy / intransigence / jobsworthism ...)

GEISLINGER ZEITUNG : Friday May 18th

STREET THEATRE in the Geislingen weekly market

The photo caption reads : The dragon is defeated and the hero can celebrate. With a dragon hunt from the middle ages, a British ensemble advertised the Donzdorf International Theatre Festival at the Geislingen Market on Wednesday.

BRITONS ON A DRAGON HUNT.
A dragon hunt in the Geislingen weekly market? Eleven Britons made this possible - and advertised the Donzdorf Theatre Festival at the same time.

The passers by in the weekly market at Geislingen had the chance to be enchanted by a very special play. The English Street Theatre Company “Harlow Theatre” amazed them with a colourful story about the Fight of Saint George and the Dragon - while, at the same time, they advertised the sixth International Theatre Festival in Donzdorf, which is taking place until May 20th in the village in the Lauter Valley.

“We are quite mad,” said Michael Branwell from Harlow in Essex, as he explained why his group loved street theatre so much. He laughed and, in the role of the Fool, jumped off among the public, telling them, without the need for a loudspeaker, about the noble-minded George. A bit later, he changed into the role of the Dragon, who was to be beaten in combat.

The eleven man team, known as the “Harlow International Theatre Exchange”, have been performing in the open for the best part of twenty years, with all the energy and enthusiasm we saw in the Geislingen market. The “Play of Saint George and the Dragon” got under way with a lot of obvious enjoyment. In a mixture of serious playing and simple fun, the colourfully costumed Britons produced a performance of a very special kind, which is still performed in the more rural areas of England at New Year.

The way in which David Albinson had chosen parts of the traditional story and introduced elements from the 21st century made the whole thing very understandable for a wide audience. And it was fun.
